The author placed in the historical section a group of events that shared certain common features, while those with a different set of features were set in the prophetic section. The grouping of events in the two sections does not seem to be by chance or random placement of events. But Isaiah finished this section of his writings with a hopeful chapter concerning the blessings that come to people who are faithful to the Lord. Heavenly rewards are here, as elsewhere, linked to earthly faithfulness and service. Abrahams response to this request was: They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them (Luke 16:29). Surrounded by the enemy, the remnant may be in danger of relegating themselves, their function, and their significance to the role of insignificant, minor players of a local drama. The gospel of Jesus Christ faces death head-on, with the proclamation that while death is the consequence of sin, Christ is the cure for sin and death. 20:5), here the heavenly messenger raised both his right hand and his left hand toward heaven, as the more complete guarantee of the truth of what is about to be affirmed. The answer Daniel is given in verse 9 seems to be a gentle refusal to supply the information he requested. Daniel is promised that the multitude of those who sleep "will awake" some to everlasting life and others to everlasting disgrace (Daniel 12:1, cf John 5:28-29). In His grace, God brings the nation Israel into the most terrible time of their national existence to press them beyond the limits of their power, wisdom, and strength and to turn them to Himself for salvation. This is generally understood to mean a period of three and one-half years. In Daniels vision of chapter 8, the little horn of this vision extends his kingdom toward the Beautiful Land (verse 9), overcomes some of the host of heaven (verse 10), and exalts himself as though he were equal with the commander of the host (verse 11). Later Daniel fainted and became sick as a result of the vision experience (8:27). For the sinner, the doctrine of the resurrection is the basis for fear and for repentance. Sometimes we feel that to identify ourselves as the remnant is to make claims to being better than others. A time of pain will come upon her, but it is through this pain that the joy of new life will come to pass. At this time, the king of the North will encamp his troops between the seas and the beautiful Holy Mountain (11:45), and then Michael will arise. 11 And he said to me, O Daniel, man of high esteem, understand the words that I am about to tell you and stand upright, for I have now been sent to you.
